The Novena of Aguinaldos
The Novena of Aguinaldos (aguinaldos
means "bonuses" or "benefits") is a beautiful Adventnovena
tradition
popular in Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. It was published by
Fernando de Jesús Larrea, a Franciscan priest who preached in Colombia
and Ecuador, in 1743. Mother María Ignacia made a few additions -- "The
Joys" -- later,
but otherwise the novena comes to us relatively intact.
It is a hugely popular custom in the aforementioned countries, one that
brings together family and friends (or co-workers) for nine days in a
row to read readings, pray, make music, and eat together, especially
empanadas, buñuelos, tamales, arroz con leche (rice pudding), a thick,
firm custard called natilla, and a dark fruit cake called "torta negra"
-- with Colombian hot chocolate to wash it all down.
Typically, a different family member or friend will host the gatherings
each night, but that's not necessarily the case. Sometimes, they take
place in churches, among neighbors or college classmates -- or even in
schools and offices, including governmental offices (isn't that
marvelous?).
The Novena, which begins on December 16 and ends on Christmas Eve,
comes
in
six parts, all of which are the same except for the readings that make
up the "Daily Considerations":

cada día). These are readings that change for each of the nine
days. Usually, one person is chosen each night to read these.

The Joys (Los Gozos) which are based on the O
Antiphons, with a chorus that comes between each verse. The chorus,
which begs the Baby Jesus to hurry up and come,
is played on instruments and sung.

While someone is playing the chorus's chords on whatever instrument is

about, others are keeping time with tambourines, maracas, drums, by
clapping, etc. Children often make their own instruments (e.g., bottle
caps or little pebbles in a plastic baggie to use as maracas, a wooden
stick against the bottom of a box or pot to use as drum, etc.). Others
might be playing the melody on recorders or other instruments. In any
case, please, sing the chorus in Spanish even if you
otherwise pray this novena in English.
So gather your family and friends around the creche, light some
candles, burn some incense, hand out musical instruments, decide who
will read the Daily Consideration, have food ready to eat and some
carols (villancicos) chosen to
sing for when the novena ends each night, and let's begin. The

pages).
O Most Gracious God of infinite love, You loved humankind so much, You
gave us in Your Son the best pledge of Your love, so that Jesus, made
human in the womb of a Virgin and born in a manger, would be our health
and remedy. I, on behalf of all humanity,
give You infinite thanks for such a sovereign benefit. In return for
this great gift, I offer You the poverty, simplicity, humility and
other virtues of Your Incarnate Son. I implore You by His divine
merits, the discomforts He suffered when He was born, and sweet tears

humanity: “Draw from this Divine Heart. Ask all that you desire through
the merits of My Holy Childhood. Nothing will be refused to you." Full
of confidence in Thee, O Jesus, Who are Truth itself, we come to make
known all our misery to you. Help us to lead a Holy life in order to
attain a Blessed Eternity. Grant us through the
infinite Merits of Your Incarnation and of Your Childhood, the graces
of which we are most in need. No, we shall not be deceived in our hope.
We abandon ourselves to Thee, O Omnipotent Child, in virtue of Your
Divine Promise, You will favorably receive and deign to grant our
prayer. Amen.
Daily Considerations
Day 1: December 16
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God (John 1:1).” In this profound depth of eternity, the Son of God
reposed before He humbled Himself to descend to earth and visibly take
possession of the grotto of Bethlehem. The life of the Eternal Word in
the bosom of His Father was a wonderful life and yet, sublime mystery!
He seeks an earthly dwelling not because there was something lacking in
His infinite happiness, but rather His Infinite Mercy longed for the
redemption and salvation of humankind, and without Him it could not
come to pass. The sin of Adam offended God and that infinite offense
could not be forgiven but by the merits of the same God. The fallen
children of Adam were disobedient and deserved an eternal punishment.
In order to save mankind and satisfy their sin, it was necessary that
the Eternal Word take human form and in obedience to the will of His
Father, atone by His suffering and death for the disobedience, pride,
ingratitude and rebelliousness of man. And so, with burning desire to
save mankind “the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14)”
in order to redeem guilty humanity.
Day 2: December 17
The Eternal Word is about to take His created nature in the Holy House
of Nazareth. When the shadow of the Divine Secret came over her, Mary
was alone, engulfed in prayer. She spent the silent hours of the night
in closer union with God, and while she prayed, the Word took
possession of His created abode. However, He did not arrive
unexpectedly. Before manifesting Himself, He sent a messenger, who was
the Archangel Gabriel, to ask Mary, on God’s behalf, her consent for
the Incarnation. The Creator did not want to bring about this great
mystery without the consent of His creature. That moment was very
solemn. Mary had the choice to refuse...Oh, with what delightful joy,
with what ineffable indulgence awaited the Holy Trinity when Mary
opened her lips to pronounce the Fiat which must have been a sweet
melody to His ears, while confirming her deep humility to the
Omnipotent Divine Will. The Immaculate Virgin has given her consent.
The Archangel has disappeared. God has taken the form of created
nature; the Eternal Will is accomplished and creation is complete. The
Word was made flesh, and although invisible to the world, He now lived
among men for whom His immense love came to save.
Day 3: December 18
Thus began the Incarnate life of the Child Jesus. Let us consider the
glorious soul and the Holy Body he had taken, adoring them profoundly.
Admiring in the first place the soul of the Divine Child, let us
consider in it the plenitude of His Omniscience, by which from the
first moment of His life He saw the Divine Essence more clearly than
all of the angels and read the past and the future with all His
mysteries and knowledge. From the soul of the Child Jesus let us now
turn to His body, which was a world of wonders, a masterpiece of God's
hand. He desired that it be small and weak like that of all children,
and subject to all the hardships of infancy to resemble us more and to
partake in our humiliations. The beauty of that body of the Divine
Child was superior to anything imagined ever before, and the Divine
Blood that began to flow through His veins from the moment of his
Incarnation, is the same blood that washed away all stains of the
guilty world. Let us ask Him to wash our stains in the Sacrament of
Penance, so that the joyous day of Christmas finds us purified,
forgiven and prepared to receive Him with love and spiritual advancement
Day 4: December 19
From the womb of His Mother, the Child Jesus began to put into practice
His entire submission to God, which continued without any interruption
throughout His entire life. He adored His Eternal Father, loved Him,
and submitted to His will, accepting with resignation the state of His
being and fully acknowledging all of His weaknesses, His humiliations,
and all of His discomforts. Who among us would want to go back to a
similar state, with the full enjoyment of reason and reflection? It was
thus that the Divine Child entered His painful and humble path, and
began to humble Himself before His Father, in order to teach us what
God deserves from His creatures and to atone for our pride, the source
of all our sins. Do we desire to make a real prayer? Let us begin to
form in it an exact idea, meditating on the Child in the womb of His
Mother. The Divine Child prays in the most perfect way: He does not
speak; He does not meditate, nor does He get caught up in tender
affections. He simply accepts and offers the state in which He came
into the world as His prayer with the intention of honoring God. In
this state, He highly expressed everything that God deserves, and how
He wants to be loved by us. Let us join with the prayers of the Holy
Child in Mary's womb; let us unite to His deep submission and let this
be the first affection of our sacrifice to God. Let us be invisible to
our own eyes and may God be our all.
Day 5: December 20
We've seen the life that the Child Jesus carried out in the womb of His
Most Pure Mother. Let us also see today the life that Mary lead during
the same period of time. Mary did not cease in waiting in wonder for
the moment that she would enjoy that beatific vision on earth: the face
of God Incarnate. She was about to see that human face that would light
up the heavens for all eternity. She was going to read the filial love
in those same eyes whose rays would spread happiness forever to the
chosen millions. She was going to see Him in the presumed ignorance of
His infancy, the charm of His youth, and in the serenity of His mature
age. Such was the extraordinary life of the expectant Mary! Let us not
be content with looking at Jesus living in Mary, but rather let us
think about how He also resides in essence, power and presence within us
Day 6: December 21
Jesus was conceived in Nazareth, and, there He should have been born.
But, God had a different plan, and the prophets had foretold that the
Messiah would be born in Bethlehem of Judea, the city of David. To
fulfill this prediction, God used a method that seemed to have no
connection with the latter, namely: the order given by the Emperor
Caesar Augustus that all subjects of the Roman Empire take part in a
census in the place of their origin. Mary and Joseph, as they were
descendants of David, were forced to go to Bethlehem. Jesus knew where
He was to be born, and so He inspired His parents to submit themselves
to Divine Providence, and in this way they fulfilled God’s Will. Let us
observe the direction of the Divine Child, because it is the most
important in the spiritual life. Let us learn that those who entrust
themselves to the Lord,
no longer belong to themselves, but only to the Will of God.
Day 7: December 22
Let us imagine the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, carrying
with her the yet unborn Creator of the Universe made man. Let us
reflect upon the humility and obedience of the Divine Child. He obeys a
foreign prince who mandates a census in the province. He humbled
Himself to take part in it before He came into the world. The longing
of Joseph and the expectation of Mary are things that no human tongue
can explain. The Eternal Father finds Himself, if it is permissible to
use this expression, divinely impatient and eager to give His only Son
to the world, and see Him take His place among the visible creatures.
The Holy Spirit is burning with desire to present to the light of day
that beautiful Holy Humanity that He Himself formed with such special
and divine care
Day 8: December 23
Joseph and Mary arrive in Bethlehem, seeking a place at the inns, but
nothing was to be found as all were full, and they were rejected
because of their poverty. However, nothing can disturb the inner peace
of those who are steadfast in the Lord. If Joseph felt any sadness in
the rejection from inn to inn thinking of the discomfort of Mary and
the Child, then his sadness was relieved with holy peace when he fixed
his eyes upon his chaste wife. The Child, although yet unborn,
delighted in these rejections which were a prelude of His future
humiliations. The sound of every slammed door shut before them was a
sweet melody to His ears. This is what He came to look for. The desire
of those humiliations was what made Him want to take human form. Oh
Divine Child of Bethlehem! These days in which so many of us have spent
in parties or other entertainments, or relaxing comfortably in
luxurious and rich mansions, have been for your parents days of fatigue
and discomfort of all kinds. Ah! The spirit of Bethlehem is that of a
world that has forgotten God. How many times has it also been our
spirit! The sun sets on December 24th behind the rooftops of Bethlehem
and its final rays gild the tops of steep cliffs that surround them.
Rude men roughly elbow the Lord in the streets of the eastern village,
and close their doors when they see His mother. The heavens appear
purplish above the hills frequented by the shepherds. The stars appear
one after the other. In a few more hours, the Eternal Word will appear.
Day 9: December 24
The night closed entirely on the fields of Bethlehem. Rejected by men
and seeing themselves without shelter, Mary and Joseph have left the
inhospitable town, and have taken refuge in a grotto at the foot of a
hill. The Queen of Angels continued riding the donkey that had served
her during the trip and in the cave they found a gentle ox. The Divine
Child, unknown by His human creatures, will have to turn to the aid of
the irrational beasts to heat with their warm breath the icy air of
that winter night, and they, in turn, show Him with this humble act,
the respect and adoration that Bethlehem had denied Him. It is now
midnight, and, suddenly we see within that manger, empty just moments
before, the awaited Divine Child, prophesied and longed-for for four
thousand years with such ineffable yearnings. At His feet the Blessed
Mother is prostrate in such a fashion that no one can imagine. Joseph
also approaches Him and pays Him homage; and so then commences his
mysterious and imponderable role of foster father of the Redeemer of
mankind. The multitude of angels who descend from heaven to contemplate
that unparalleled wonder, break out in joy and make the air vibrate in
the harmonies of the "Gloria in Excelsis,” the same echo of adoration
that takes place around the throne of the Almighty, made audible for an
instant to the ears of poor earth. Summoned by the angels, the
shepherds of the region rush to worship the "newborn" and present their
humble offerings. The mysterious Star of Jacob is already shining in
the East, and the splendid caravan of the Magi begin their journey to
Bethlehem, which in a few days time will come to lay at the feet of the
Divine Child, gold, frankincense and myrrh, which are symbols of love,
adoration and mortification. Oh, adorable Child! We who have done this
Novena to prepare ourselves for the day of Your Nativity, also wish to
offer You our humble adoration; do not reject it: come to our souls,
come to our hearts full of love. Enflame in our hearts the devotion to
Your Holy Childhood, not only limited at the time of Your Nativity, but
always and forever; a devotion that faithfully and zealously propagated
will lead us to eternal life, freeing us from sin and sowing in us all
Christian virtues. Amen.

Consideraciones Diarias
Día 1: 16 diciembre
En el principio de los tiempos el Verbo reposaba en el seno de su Padre
en lo más alto de los cielos: allí era la causa, a la par que el modelo
de toda creación. En esas profundidades de una incalculable eternidad
permanecía el Niño de Belén. Allí es donde debemos datar la genealogía
del Eterno que no tiene antepasados, y contemplar la vida de
complacencia infinita que allí llevaba.
La vida del Verbo Eterno en el seno de su Padre era una vida
maravillosa y sin embargo, misterio sublime, busca otra morada en una
mansión creada. No era porque en su mansión eterna faltase algo a su
infinita felicidad sino porque su misericordia infinita anhelaba la
redención y la salvación del género humano, que sin Él no podría
verificarse.
El pecado de Adán había ofendido a un Dios y esa ofensa infinita no
podría ser condonada sino por los méritos del mismo Dios. La raza de
Adán había desobedecido y merecido un castigo eterno; era pues,
necesario para salvarla y satisfacer su culpa que Dios, sin dejar el
cielo, tomase la forma del hombre sobre la tierra y con la obediencia a
los designios de su Padre, expiase aquella desobediencia, ingratitud y
rebeldía.
Era necesario en las miras de su amor que tomase la forma, las
debilidades e ignorancia sistemática del hombre, que creciese para
darle crecimiento espiritual; que sufriese, para morir a sus pasiones y
a su orgullo y por eso el Verbo Eterno ardiendo en deseos de salvar al
hombre resolvió hacerse hombre también y así redimir al culpable.
Día 2: 17 diciembre
El verbo eterno se halla a punto de tomar su naturaleza creada en la
santa casa de Nazaret, en donde moraban María y José. Cuando la sombra
del decreto divino vino a deslizarse sobre ella, María estaba sola y
engolfada en la oración. Pasaba las silenciosas horas de la noche en la
unión más estrecha con Dios; y mientras oraba, el Verbo tomó posesión
de su morada creada. Sin embargo, no llegó inopinadamente: antes de
presentarse envió a un mensajero, que fue el Arcángel San Gabriel, para
pedir a María de parte de Dios su consentimiento para la encarnación.
El creador no quiso efectuar ese gran misterio sin la aquiescencia de
su criatura. Aquel momento fue muy solemne: era potestativo en María
rehusar... Con qué adorables delicias, con qué inefable complacencia
aguardaría la Santísima Trinidad a que María abriese los labios y
pronunciase el "sí" que debió ser suave melodía para sus oídos, y con
el cual se conformaba su profunda humildad a la omnipotente voluntad
divina. La Virgen Inmaculada ha dado su asentimiento. El arcángel ha
desaparecido. Dios se ha revestido de una naturaleza creada; la
voluntad eterna está cumplida y la creación completa. En las regiones
del mundo angélico estalla el júbilo inmenso, pero la Virgen María ni
le oía ni le hubiese prestado atención a él. Tenía inclinada la cabeza
y su alma estaba sumida en el silencio que se asemejaba al de Dios. El
Verbo se había hecho carne, y aunque todavía invisible para el mundo,
habitaba ya entre los hombres que su inmenso amor había venido a
rescatar. No era ya sólo el Verbo eterno; era el Niño Jesús revestido
de la apariencia humana, y justificando ya el elogio que de Él han
hecho todas las generaciones en llamarle el más hermoso de los hijos de
los hombres.
Día 3: 18 diciembre
Así había comenzado su vida encarnada el Niño. Consideremos el alma
gloriosa y el santo cuerpo que había tomado, adorándolos profundamente.
Admirando en el primer lugar el alma de ese divino Niño, consideremos
en ella la plenitud de su gracia santificadora; la de su ciencia
beatífica, por la cual desde el primer momento de su vida vio la divina
esencia más claramente que todos los ángeles y leyó lo pasado lo
porvenir con todos sus arcanos conocimientos. No supo nunca por
adquisición voluntaria nada que no supiese por infusión desde el primer
momento de su ser; pero él adoptó todas las enfermedades de nuestra
naturaleza a que dignamente podía someterse, aun cuando no fuesen
necesarias para la grande obra que debía cumplir. Pidámosle que sus
divinas facultades suplan la debilidad de las nuestras y les den nueva
energía; que su memoria nos enseñe a recordar sus beneficios, su
entendimiento a pensar en Él, su voluntad a no hacer sino lo que Él
quiere y en servicio suyo. Del alma del Niño Jesús pasemos ahora a su
cuerpo. Que era un mundo de maravillas, una obra maestra de la mano de
Dios. No era, como el nuestro, una traba para el alma: era por el
contrario, un nuevo elemento de santidad. Quiso que fuese pequeño y
débil como el de todos los niños, y sujeto a todas las incomodidades de
la infancia, para asemejarse más a nosotros y participar de nuestras
humillaciones. El Espíritu Santo formó ese cuerpecillo divino con tal
delicadeza y tal capacidad de sentir, que pudiese sufrir hasta el
exceso para cumplir la grande obra de nuestra redención. La belleza de
ese cuerpo del divino Niño fue superior a cuanto se ha imaginado jamás;
la divina sangre que por sus venas empezó a circular desde el momento
de la encarnación es la que lava todas las manchas del mundo culpable.
Pidámosle que lave las nuestras en el sacramento de la penitencia, para
que el día de su Navidad nos encuentre purificados, perdonados y
dispuestos a recibirle con amor y provecho espiritual.
Día 4: 19 diciembre
Desde el seno de su madre comenzó el Niño Jesús a poner en práctica su
entera sumisión a Dios, que continuó sin la menor interrupción durante
toda su vida. Adoraba a su Eterno Padre, le amaba, se sometía a su
voluntad; aceptaba con resignación el estado en que se hallaba
conociendo toda su debilidad, toda su humillación, todas sus
incomodidades. ¿Quién de nosotros quisiera retroceder a un estado
semejante con el pleno goce de la razón y de la reflexión?, ¿quién
pudiera sostener a sabiendas un martirio tan prolongado, tan penoso de
todas maneras? Por ahí entró el Divino Niño en su dolorosa y humilde
carrera; así empezó a anonadarse delante de su Padre, a enseñarnos lo
que Dios merece por parte de su criatura, a expiar nuestro orgullo,
origen de todos nuestros pecados y hacernos sentir toda la criminalidad
y desórdenes del orgullo.
Deseamos hacer una verdadera oración; empecemos por formarnos de ella
una exacta idea contemplando al Niño en el seno de su madre. El divino
Niño ora y ora del modo más excelente. No habla, no medita ni se
deshace en tiernos afectos. Su mismo estado, aceptado con la intención
de honrar a Dios, es su oración y ese estado expresa altamente todo lo
que Dios merece y de qué modo quiere ser adorado de nosotros.
Unámonos a las oraciones del Niño Dios en el seno de María; unámonos al
profundo abatimiento y sea este el primer efecto de nuestro sacrificio
a Dios. Démonos a dios no para ser algo como lo pretende continuamente
nuestra vanidad sino para ser nada, para quedar enteramente consumidos
y anonadados, para renunciar a la estimación de nosotros mismos, a todo
cuidado de nuestra grandeza aunque sea espiritual, a todo movimiento de
vanagloria. Desaparezcamos a nuestros propios ojos y que Dios sólo sea
todo para nosotros.
Día 5: 20 diciembre
Ya hemos visto la vida que llevaba el Niño Jesús en el seno de su
purísima Madre; veamos hoy la vida que llevaba también María durante el
mismo espacio de tiempo. Necesidad hoy de que nos detengamos en ella si
queremos comprender, en cuanto es posible a nuestra limitada capacidad,
los sublimes misterios de la encarnación y el modo como hemos de
corresponder a ellos.
María no cesaba de aspirar por el momento en que gozaría de esa visión
beatífica terrestre: la faz de Dios encarnado. Estaba a punto de ver
aquella faz humana que debía iluminar el cielo durante toda la
eternidad. Iba a leer el amor filial en aquellos mismos ojos cuyos
rayos deberían esparcir para siempre la felicidad en millones de
elegidos. Iba a ver aquel rostro todos los días, a todas horas, cada
instante, durante muchos años. Iba a verle en la ignorancia aparente de
la infancia, en los encantos particulares de la juventud y en la
serenidad reflexiva de la edad madura... Haría todo lo que quisiese de
aquella faz divina; podría estrecharla contra la suya con toda la
libertad del amor materno; cubrir de besos los labios que deberían
pronunciar la sentencia a todos los hombres; contemplarla a su gusto
durante su sueño o despierto, hasta que la hubiese aprendido de
memoria... ¿Cuán ardientemente deseaba ese día!
Tal era la vida de expectativa de María... era inaudita en sí misma,
más no por eso dejaba de ser el tipo magnífico de toda vida cristiana,
no nos contentemos con admirar a Jesús residiendo en María, sino
pensemos que en nosotros también reside por esencia, potencia y
presencia.
Sí, Jesús nace continuamente en nosotros y de nosotros, por las buenas
obras que nos hace capaces de cumplir, y por nuestra cooperación a la
gracia; por la manera que el alma del que se halla en gracia es un seno
perpetuo de María, un Belén interior sin fin. Después de la comunión
Jesús habita en nosotros, durante algunos instantes, real y
sustancialmente como Dios y como hombre, porque el mismo niño que
estaba en María está también en el Santísimo Sacramento. ¿Qué es todo
esto sino una participación de la vida de María durante esos
maravillosos meses, y una expectativa llena de delicias como la suya?
Día 6: 21 diciembre
Jesús había sido concebido en Nazaret, domicilio de San José y de
María, y allí era de creerse que había de nacer, según todas las
probabilidades. Más Dios lo tenía dispuesto de otra manera y los
profetas habían anunciado que el Mesías nacería en Belén de Judá,
ciudad de David. Para que se cumpliese esa predicción, Dios se sirvió
de un medio que no parecía tener ninguna relación con este objeto, a
saber: la orden dada por el emperador Augusto de que todos los súbditos
del imperio romano se empadronasen en el lugar de donde eran
originarios. María y José como descendientes que eran de David, no
estaban dispensados de ir a Belén, y ni la situación de la Virgen
Santísima ni la necesidad en que estaba José del trabajo diario que les
aseguraba la subsistencia, pudo eximirles de este largo y penoso viaje,
la estación más rigurosa e incómoda del año. No ignoraba Jesús en qué
lugar debería nacer e inspiraba a sus padres que se entreguen a la
Providencia, y que de esta manera concurran inconscientemente a la
ejecución de sus designios. Almas interiores observad este manejo del
divino Niño, porque es el más importante de la vida espiritual:
aprended que quien se haya entregado a Dios ya no ha de pertenecerse a
sí mismo, ni ha de querer en cada instante sino lo que Dios quiera para
él; siguiéndole ciegamente aún en las cosas exteriores, tales como el
cambio de lugar donde quiera que le plazca conducirle. Ocasión tendréis
de observar esta dependencia y esta fidelidad inviolable en toda la
vida de Jesucristo, y este es el punto sobre el cual se han esmerado en
imitarle los santos y las almas verdaderamente interiores, renunciando
absolutamente a su propia voluntad.
Día 7: 22 diciembre
Representémonos el viaje de María y José hacia Belén, llevando consigo
aún no nacido, al creador del universo, hecho hombre. Contemplemos la
humildad y la obediencia de ese Divino Niño, que aunque de raza judía y
habiendo amado durante siglos a su pueblo con una predilección
inexplicable obedece así a un príncipe extranjero que forma el censo de
población de su provincia, como si hubiese para él en esa circunstancia
algo que le halagase, y quisiera apresurarse a aprovechar la ocasión de
hacerse empadronar oficial y auténticamente como súbdito en el momento
en que venía al mundo.
El anhelo de José, la expectativa de María son cosas que no puede
expresar el lenguaje humano. El Padre Eterno se halla, si nos es lícito
emplear esta expresión, adorablemente impaciente por dar a su hijo
único al mundo y verle ocupar su puesto entre las criaturas visibles.
El Espíritu Santo arde en deseos de presentar a la luz del día esa
santa humanidad, que El mismo ha formado con divino esmero.
Día 8: 23 diciembre
Llegan a Belén José y María buscando hospedaje en los mesones, pero no
encuentran, ya por hallarse todos ocupados, ya porque se les deshace a
causa de su pobreza. Empero, nada puede turbar la paz interior de los
que están fijos en Dios.
Si José experimentaba tristeza cuando era rechazado de casa en casa,
porque pensaba en María y en el Niño, sonreíase también con santa
tranquilidad cuando fijaba la mirada en su casta esposa. El ruido de
cada puerta que se cerraba ante ellos era una dulce melodía para sus
oídos.
Eso era lo que había venido a buscar. El deseo de esas humillaciones
era lo que había contribuido a hacerle tomar la forma humana. Oh!
Divino Niño de Belén! Estos días que tantos han pasado en fiestas y
diversiones o descansando muellemente en cómodas y ricas mansiones, ha
sido para vuestros padres un día de fatiga y vejaciones de toda clase.
¡Ay! el espíritu de Belén es el de un mundo que ha olvidado a Dios.
¡Cuántas veces no ha sido también el nuestro! Pónese el sol el 24 de
diciembre detrás de los tejados de Belén y sus últimos rayos doran la
cima de las rocas escarpadas que lo rodean. Hombres groseros, codean
rudamente al Señor en las calles de aquella aldea oriental y cierran
sus puertas al ver a su Madre.
La bóveda de los cielos aparece purpurina por encima de aquellas
colinas frecuentadas por los pastores. Las estrellas van apareciendo
unas tras otras. Algunas horas más y aparecerá el Verbo Eterno.
Día 9: 24 diciembre
La noche ha cerrado del todo en las campiñas de Belén. Desechados por
los hombres y viéndose sin abrigo, María y José han salido de la
inhospitalaria población, y se han refugiado en una gruta que se
encontraba al pie de la colina. Seguía a la Reina de los Ángeles el
jumento que le había servido de cabalgadura durante el viaje y en
aquella cueva hallaron un manso buey, dejado ahí probablemente por
alguno de los caminantes que había ido a buscar hospedaje en la ciudad.
El Divino Niño, desconocido por sus criaturas va a tener que acudir a
los irracionales para que calienten con su tibio aliento la atmósfera
helada de esa noche de invierno, y le manifiesten con esto su humilde
actitud, el respeto y la adoración que le había negado Belén. La rojiza
linterna que José tenía en la mano iluminaba tenuemente ese paupérrimo
recinto, ese pesebre lleno de paja que es figura profética de las
maravillas del altar y de la íntima y prodigiosa unión eucarística que
Jesús ha de contraer con los hombres.. María está en adoración en medio
de la gruta, y así van pasando silenciosamente las horas de esa noche
llena de misterios. Pero ha llegado la media noche y de repente vemos
dentro de ese pesebre antes vacío, al Divino Niño esperado, vaticinado,
deseado durante cuatro mil años con tan inefables anhelos. A sus pies
se postra su Santísima Madre en los transporte de una adoración de la
cual nada puede dar idea. José también se le acerca y le rinde el
homenaje con que inaugura su misterioso e imperturbable oficio de padre
putativo del redentor de los hombres.
La multitud de ángeles que descienden del cielo a contemplar esa
maravilla sin par, deja estallar su alegría y hace vibrar en los aires
las armonías de esa "Gloria in Excelsis", que es el eco de adoración
que se produce en torno al trono del Altísimo hecha perceptible por un
instante a los oídos de la pobre tierra. Convocados por ellos, vienen
en tropel los pastores de la comarca a adorar al "recién nacido" y a
prestarle sus humildes ofrendas.
Ya brilla en Oriente la misteriosa estrella de Jacob; y ya se pone en
marcha hacia Belén la caravana espléndida de los Reyes Magos, que
dentro de pocos días vendrán a depositar a los pies del Divino Niño el
oro, el incienso y la mirra, que son símbolos de la caridad, de la
oración y de la mortificación. Oh, adorable Niño! Nosotros también los
que hemos hecho esta novena para prepararnos al día de vuestra Navidad,
queremos ofreceros nuestra pobre adoración; no la rechacéis: venid a
nuestras almas, venid a nuestros corazones llenos de amor.
Encended en ellos la devoción a vuestra Santa Infancia, no intermitente
y sólo circunscrita al tiempo de vuestra Navidad sino siempre y en
todos los tiempos; devoción que fiel y celosamente propagada nos
conduzca a la vida eterna, librándonos del pecado y sembrando en
nosotros todas las virtudes cristianas.
